PS3 price drop confirmed; 40GB pack revealed
Post #1 - Posted 10/05/2007 2:58 PM
Sony unveils two new cut-price bundles to spearhead Christmas push in UK

From October 10th the existing PS3 Starter Pack will be replaced by a 60GB Value Pack, boasting a fully-functioning PS3 with one SIXAXIS controller and two first party titles for £349 – a price drop of around £75.

New to the market on the same day will be the 40GB model. It will retail at £299 - the same price Xbox 360 Elite – but features only two USB 2.0 ports and no longer includes the multi memory card port. It will also lack backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

F@ck yeah!

The lack of PS2 backward compatibility on the lower end model is just plain retarded.

Very true Kerr, I share your thoughts on that one.

Apparently when the PS3 was launched here in the UK Sony had removed the some of the PS2 components that could be found in the early JAP and US models to reduce production costs. Its now done via firmware updates like M$ have done with the Xbox360. Now if I'm right then what is missing from the cheaper PS3 models to perform backwards compatibility?

The people who buy the cheaper model are going to be parents of kids and people who just wont care about the lack of so many USB ports and card reader slots and will just keep hold of there PS2's. I still have my Slimline PS2 but that's only being used as a DVD player these days anyway.

Additionally, I read that the DS3 controller, is slated for release in Japan, this Nov 11.

Does Sony need to do a firmware update for these new controllers to work?
Are firmware updates released regionally?
If so, then I guess importing or buying online would be moot.

I find that all the little bits and pieces of the PS3 problems (not having rumble, bad launch games, poor marketing, high price, too expensive etc.) lead to the 360 selling better than the PS3.

My friend has a PS3 and he's highly satisfied with it. I would get it too if it wasn't so damn expensive.

If they had worked out these problems in the first place the PS3 probably would be doing far better than it is right now.

What's a GT5 fan to do? Pay almost $650 just for Gran Turismo 5?

I think not. I recently got a Wii and I'm pretty satisfied with it.

The way I see it, PS3 is good, but it's not good enough.

I was in my local Town this morning and the GAME shop was... errm dead and I'd forgotten that they price drop was due today. Anyway GAME.UK has this deal at the moment and I must admit that if I hadn't paid £375 for Motorstorm, Resistance and 2 blu-ray DVD movies then I would have been interested.
