Pics from the auto show
There are two major auto shows that take place each year in Kansas City. The busiest and least entertaining is the K.C. Auto Show which has all the new cars and some minimal concept work from the major automakers. The second is the World of Wheels show. The World of Wheels typically caters to the custom crowd, and this year was no exception. I snapped some pics of the more memorable cars.... enjoy.

Very Sweet

The Z28 was nice, the Cobra even better. I like the Smokey and WIlly's. The Cycle, Roadster, and Headers all very nice. You have to absolutely love the Surprise. Don't care too much for the 300ZX . . . I'm not big into the all the body kits and such. I don't body kits, as long as they don't take away from the factory car's look. Like very subtle things.

ChevyCorvette - I totally agree with you on body kits. I've always been of the type who would rather drive a sleeper than a car with a bunch of cosmetics and nothing in the way of performance mods. I'm not opposed to putting all that body kit stuff on as long as the car has the performance to back it up. In the case of the 300ZX, you'll notice a HUGE bottle of NOS. I would've skipped it otherwise.

It's not necessarily having to do with performance, but I just want a car that has subtle things, but actually noticeable, done to it and looks pretty close to factory. I'm thinking that's a big reason why I like the ALMS series so much. The cars, well except for the prototypes, look very close to factory look. In the case of the Vipers, alot of the internals of the engine are too . . . I would be guessing a majority of the parts though are beefer up to withstand the long races they endure. And the truck tuning industry actually does this pretty well. But I would definitely go with performance before doing anything cosmetically. I would say though, this 300ZX isn't as bad as Civics, Integras, and things along that line. I just don't see what is so appealing about a four banger with a turbo on it (except for WRXs, EVOs, rally cars, and some others), I mean big whoppied freakin do. It's a front wheel drive car . . . what's the point? When really racing a car, (like GT3 stuff), they just will get their asses handed to them . . . just like in some series on speed with Miata's and Integra's, the Miata's straight up smoke em'. Ok, I'm going to stop now, I'm just rambling.

That's why you'll notice I didn't include any other ricers - trust me there were many. I agree on FWD vs. RWD - everyone who plays GT3 has to fight the inherent tendency of understeering with FWD cars and we all know this happens in real life. There is something to be said about where you start out - meaning with what base car you're going to mod. I've never seen much purpose in buying a $15k 140HP 4-banger and sinking another $10k into it so it will have 250+HP. Why not spend $25k on a car that has decent performance to begin with.
The WRX is a car that should be respected if you're a street racer - trust me I know.
BTW that GT40 is an original, not a replica or kit - I talked with the gentleman who owned it.
Speaking of 4-bangers with turbos - you're going to start seeing a bunch of really annoying teenagers driving the new Dodge SRT-4. If you have'n't seen it, it's a Neon with a turbo slapped on it. Based on paper performance it will keep up with a stock Mustang GT.

When I'm 16
I saw a 1995 3000GT VR4 Turbo. and the asking price was 10,000$. I told my dad that that it would outrun our 'vette ( 1979 L82 4speed ) . I shouldn't have done that cuz now he won't buy it for me. but I'll find one of those and increase the boost put a muffler on it and lower it to the ground for less than 2,000$! I asked the guy how much power it'll have. He said anywhere between 380-410 hp. So in 2 years I could find one for 9,000$. So for 11,000 bucks I can outrun anyone of you without Nos!..
Damn.....I could put Nos on it too.........but I'll just have to wait...later
I didn't say one thing about GT3.......maybe I should...oh yeah I have a setup for the Viper GTSR concept that goes 250 mph plus..I'll put it in this week.

Cars
I do respect the WRX . . . I think that is a great car, along with the new Evo. Both of which were very respectable rally cars to begin with. I don't care for the new Dodge Neon, still FWD and that just not appeal to me, and I do know what it is. I mean whoppied freakin do is what I would say to a person who has one. I could really careless about your stupid four banger.
The GT40 is very sweet, I would love to have one.
I'm not too big of a fan of NOS, the only time you can really use it is when drag racing, the surge of power in a real race track environment would be too unpredictable to control. Plus I would rather see a big ass blower sticking out of the hood, as opposed to a NOS line being ran.

therat1989 - A good friend of mine used to own a VR4. He drove the hell out of it. Be careful who you're buying from since it's a performance car and will most likely have a lot of hard driven miles on it. I'd hate to see you buy a car that's been ridden hard and put away wet. If you're patient and willing to travel I imagine you could find a one owner that's in good shape.
Chevy - I've hated every iteration of the Neon - it's just sad that we'll now see the SRT's cruising around like they own the road.

Yeah, it is going to be very sad with so many more stupid rice burners on the street. Why can't we go back to the 60s, well at least with the cars?

VR4's are heavy as hell, almost 2 tons i heard. Not exactly good preformance weight, even with a turbo.
And, just to add, i hope when you all are talking about ricers/rice burners, you're NOT including the real japanese sports cars, like the Supra(its image was destroyed with TF&TF), RX-7(another bad rep car due to TF&TF), WRX, Evo8(trust me, it will be good, even with the new STi comming out), 300zx, 350z, 240sx, etc. None of the Civics, Tegs, Eclipses, Neons(excludes SRT-4), Accords, are anywhere near anything better to mod than for a showcar, and even then, they are too common to really be unique.
Just my rambling, i like imports way more than domestics, and i get pissed when people generalize every japanese car as a rice burner just because the image was ruined by TF&TF and all these cheaply modded civics/tegs.

Teken
Teken,
The VR-4 are a heavy car, I just looked on fast-autos.net, and it has a '99 at a touch under 3800lbs. That's just too heavy. Supra's, RX-7's, 300ZX, and all the others, except for the 240SX (I'm just not too big on those), are all great cars . . . as long as people don't turn them into a rice burner either. I'll look on eBay every so often at some Supra's and so many of them have been turned into rice burners and that is absolutely stupid. I think you would agree with me that doing that to the car would degrade it's value.

I like the 240sx only because its the base of the Silvia in Japan, and its a great drifter when tuned right. Only problem with the USDM version is they stuck a 4cyl truck motor into it, instead of a decent engine like the SR20DET. Atleast the SR20 is easily swappable.

It's not too bad of a car, the Silvia is definitely better though. I actually own an '86.5 Supra and I just like to see what some of the newer are going for and you can literally find anything on eBay. I am going to be getting a Chilton's book for my car pretty soon . . . and eBay is like the only place you can find one. You can't get one at Auto Zone or O'Reilly's or any place like that.

Any model Silvia so far is basically the corresponding 240sx chassis, with an SR20 and a little bodywork, other than that, they are basically the same. Which is why you see conversions so often in the US.

Yeah, if you can afford the insurance. They love gouging money from 16 y.o. Vette' owners.

No doubt the VR4 is a heavy car - it was pretty quick though. Lots of fun to drive on wet roads.
I love Japanese performance cars, just not Civics and the like that are 'riced out'. In fact, the only cars I have ever owned have been Japanese.
Teken - funny you mention the 240SX - I am currently driving a '01 Altima 5 speed with the same motor. It's not too shabby.
6.6 0-60 is always a good time in my book. Insurance prices will kill any 16 year old - especially with a sports car! I guess they do it for a reason since something like 2/3 of motor accidents are caused by 21 and under drivers.

Hm - good question. The engine code for my Altima is KA24DE so they are in fact different engines. I test drove a 240SX right before I ended up purchasing the Altima and the engine performance was pretty similar. In fact, I dare say the Altima was a tad quicker but it was a 240SX auto vs. an Altima 5 speed.

the KA24DE is the stock 240sx engine. Interesting, i didn't know Nissan put a truck engine in 2 cars, expecially a FWD one.
