Doom 3
Hey, are any of you tuners PC gamers? I know Doom 3 just came out and was wondering if anyone has it. I want it bad, but I'd basically have to build a new PC to enjoy playing the game.

I was looking at getting it later next month. First I want to build a racing center for the PS2 to better enjoy the wheel and pedals.

fun game, not quite what I was hoping for.

I've had it since it came out, and its a pretty fun game. Its scary (for a while, you start to expect things after playing it a few hours) and has excellent graphics. Only thing that bothered me, its a bit repetitive. Now, its great when you're in the mood for some running and gunning (the Unreal series would probably be a better bet if thats what you're into though) and maybe a few jumps here and there. Another little quip I have, its not as fast paced as the other doom games, but I guess that just adds to the atmosphere. Its worth playing just for the experience though, its a good game all around, if not a bit over hyped.

Digital_Mana - thanks for the heads up. I figured, with 10 years between games, that the game could never live up to the hype. I've always been a huge fan of the Unreal series, though Unreal2 was kind of a let down. The UT series kicks ass though.

System requierments
Well I just got and installed Doom 3, it's an 2.2 GB install plus 400 MB of drive space for the swapfile.

I'm running a P4 2.56 GHz with 512 MB RDRAM and an Radeon 9600TX 128 MB DDR, this mavhine alows me to run the game at 1024x768x32 on medium detail, wich looks very impressive, so I can only wonder how stupendous it must look on full detail. Full detail, I've been told, requers a video card with 512 MB. I don't even know if one already exists.

So thats what you're looking at.

Rambus, eh? Pricey RAM. I'd basically have to buy a new system, so I'm going to hold off for awhile. It's hard not to plonk down the $$$ now though.

Yes I know rambus is pricy indeed but when editing audio and video files thats where you realy can tell the difference in speed to DDR, I got a very large collection of records (you know vynil) that I'm busy on digitizing so any thing that speeds tis process up is very welcome.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When using Photoshop it helps to have fast RAM, not to mention SCSI drives. Though DDR speeds keep getting faster and faster...

EDIT: what format are you compressing your vinyl to (if you're compressing)? I have a very large CD collection and I rip mine to flac and then transcode to mp3 for compatibility with my car deck and flash based mp3 player. I store the flac so that I'm not out of luck in case another lossy codec ends up replacing mp3 as the defacto standard.

Kerr,

I record and edit in wave, then I compress to mp3 for use on my apple ipod (for windows).

Which codec do you use for mp3? IIRC, I use LAME 3.90.2 with the --alt-preset-standard switch. It's a good compromise between file size and sound quality.

Well, all i can say about doom 3 is

MULTIPLAYER SUCKS!!!

All they needed to do is let you add maybe u know 20 more people and the game would have been 2x better. Why they capped it at 2v2 is beyond me.

But i will say this though. The graphics are better than i thought they'd be but it's easier to run that i'd thought it'd be.

Here are my system specs.
9700pro 128
Athlon XP2700+
768 corsiar XMS PC2700 Low latency
Asus A7V600 mobo

I can run the game in 800x600 in full detail... it just boggs the framerate down to about 10. If i run it at 1024x768 then it's a little choppy with the detail settings on medium. I play the game at 800x600 with some of the settings turned down. Like AA is off. AF is biliniar. The X800 and nvidia's equivilant can both run the game with ease on full settings under 1600x1200. The 2 newest cars on the market both will run stong for quite some time. And once we start seeing the cars that are made for PCI express then it'll really start to take off.

I've been playing lots of counter strike: source beta. That's harder for my computer to run. There's lots more movable objects. But there is only one level so far, and there's no refelctions. So this game is going to be a real card killer.

Yeah I go for the UT series for multiplayer stuff. I never expected Doom 3 to live up to anything like the UT / Quake / HL series. I think I'm going to wait a bit and see how PCI-E pans out come the holiday season. I'd like to see more boards running it before I go jumping on the bandwagon.

Hello all,

Any one out here played Richard Burns Rally?

I just got the PC version and what can I say about it? 1 Graphics are excelent, 2 It is bloody difficult ( makes CMR3 feel like an arcade game ) 3 The way you can set your car up is quite simmilar to GT3, all in all a great game if you can and will put some serious time in it.
