In my experience with the gearing, I have found the "lines" on the gear "graph" most helpful in determining shift points. The more parallel they tend to be, the better distribution of power over the entire band through all the gears. The final ratio is the real key to determining how you want the car to perform. Obviously a very low or "open" final ratio will result in wider gears however the ratios will remain constant with respect to each other as you adjust this final ratio. So start with the final ratio high, or "tight", and adjust the individual gears until each one represents the portion of speed capability with respect to the max speed that you desire, and then open up that baby until you get the max speed desired. As you increase the final ratio, the "lines" will no longer be parallel but be decreasing in slope in a gradual fashion. This is good since, as said before, the gears remain in proportion to each other, they just all widen out equally.
