Gears by "Transmission Trick." Using a DS2 controller. I tend to brake too late as opposed to too early.
Suzuka Circuit best lap: 2'08.200

A touch lower final gear ratio may make for less gear changes through the twisty bit at the beginning of the course (or upgrade to a triple clutch and don't worry about gear changes). The TCS of 1 is used since the LSD accel is all but off. It gives me a little more consistent times. You could probably get a little better time without it, just watch out for spinouts in the chicane between the long straight and the home stretch.

Note that the engine has only been tuned to a low degree and that the drivetrain has not been modified to the highest degree. I really enjoy a more "normal" sound and gear change pause in my street cars - it adds a lot for me by way of distinct engine note and challenge. Fully tuned cars all sound the same, call me crazy.

Not sure about this Original Suspension as opposed to Racing, but honestly I tend to not mess with shock rebound anyway. I'm assuming that this suspension doesn't do anything stupid to the bound/rebound ratio. I'd love to hear some feedback on this subject.

BANG-FOR-YOUR-BUCK CHALLENGE!
A simple challenge to find out just which cheap car is the best on a given track. I'm borrowing this idea from TopGear_Stig_2, who posted it in his RX-7 Type RS setup. It didn't really get going there, and since I thought it was a cool idea I'm trying to give it a revival (and change the rules slightly).

Rules: Buy a car (new or used) for less than $25000. Modify it using no more than $75000. Race it at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Submit your time, as well as the budget for your vehicle.

Below is a copy of my submission, using slightly different rules, and my comments. Just an idea of how to do this.

Quote:
Car - 2001 Lancer Evo VII RS $18885

Tune - 100 wash n oil, 1200 wing, RM tires 22500, Weight Reduction 1&2&3 28700, Original Suspension 16200, Racing Brakes 4700, VCD controller 10500, Original Turbine kit 38300, racing chip 1500, racing exhaust 4800, racing intercooler 3000, racing tranny 10400, triple clutch 4700, racing flywheel 1050, carbon driveshaft 3000, port polish 5500, Total $156650

Tuned Car Specs - 495 HP, 1122 kg

Laguna Seca Time - 1'24.473

Slapped together a setup for this, lots of understeer still. The brakes are amazingly unrealistic, hauls down from 6th gear like nothin. Also, I'm pretty bad and I'm using a dualshock controller.

So there you go, a time for someone to smack down, hopefully with a different car.

Cool idea, though I think that $160k is too much for the tuning since you can buy most of the best parts. I think that about half that much would make for a more interesting challenge since it would force you to make more tradeoffs...

So there, tell me your thoughts or show us your best shot.
